Surgeon-Led Ostomy Care
Ostomy Care in New Mexico
What is an ostomy?
An ostomy is a surgically created opening (a stoma) that allows waste to leave the body when the bowel or urinary tract has been altered by disease, injury, or surgery. The most common types are colostomy (large intestine), ileostomy (small intestine), and urostomy (urinary diversion). Some are temporary; some are permanent. All require thoughtful, ongoing care to protect the surrounding skin, prevent complications, and support quality of life.
Common ostomy complications we manage
- Peristomal skin breakdown and irritant dermatitis
- Stoma retraction, prolapse, or stenosis
- Parastomal hernia
- Leakage and pouching system failures
- Mucocutaneous separation at the stoma site
- Infection and wound complications around the stoma
- Adhesion-related issues following ostomy reversal
Each of these requires a clinician who understands both the surgical anatomy and the wound-care science — which is what surgeon-led ostomy care exists to provide.
What ostomy care at Nexcell looks like
At Nexcell, your ostomy is evaluated and managed by a true gastrointestinal surgeon. Dr. Christopher Dominguez has a background as a robotic, laparoscopic, and open gastrointestinal surgeon — so no matter the site or type of ostomy, you get more than surface-level evaluation. He can work directly with your existing surgical team to keep care coordinated and on plan.
- Comprehensive surgical and wound-care evaluation, in-clinic or bedside
- Coordinated care with your gastroenterologist, primary surgeon, and home-health team
- For patients planning ostomy reversal: pre-reversal optimization, including the targeted wound care that closure success depends on
Planning to close your ostomy? Appropriate pre-reversal wound care is one of the strongest predictors of a successful reversal. We help patients arrive at their reversal procedure with the wound bed and surrounding tissue in the best possible condition.
